Amin Ahmad Islahi |
Amin Ahmad Islahi was a Muslim scholar, Philosopher, Quran researcher known for his exegeses of the Quran in Urdu. Amin Ahmad Islahi was the proclaimer of Farahi’s school of thought. He completed the exegesis of the Quran “Tadabbur-i-Quran” which was left uncompleted by Imam Hamidudin Farahi. He continued the message of Farahi, the structural coherence of the Quran.
The idea of coherency provided by Farahi is still alive because of Amin Ahmad Islahi. Mawlana Islahi will be known for his work on Quranic studies. Amin Ahmad Islahi was the most prominent pupil of Hamidudin Farahi.
Early life and education:
In 1904, Amin Ahmad Islahi was born in the village of Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh-India in a traditional Islamic family. He got admission to Madrastul Islah in Azamgarh and got graduated from there in 1922. He used to be an editor of the magazines. He edited newspapers and magazines like “Bijnor” and “Khoonch”. He also associated with the newspaper “Sach”, for some time:
He completed his studies in Urdu and Arabic literature in order to understand Quran, Sunnah, and Hadith. At that time, Muslims were suffering from the British empire and they need mercy. He was interested in the Indian freedom movement and became a part of that movement. Freedom from British imperialism was the uppermost job for him.
Association with Jammat-e-Islami:
Amin Ahmad Islahi acted as the president of the local Congress party. In the 1930s, the Ulema of the Sub-continent started to unite Muslims and wanted to privilege Islam as a complete code of life to Muslims. As a result, In 1941, Mawlana Abu ala Mawdudi and some other people found Jammat-i-Islami, which was the party made to privilege Islamic laws in the country.
Mawlana Amin Ahmad Islahi was one of them who found the Jammat-e-Islami. Many people before the partition left the Jammat due to little differences in their Islamic views. Amin Ahmad Islahi also wasn’t satisfied.
Amin Ahmad Islahi was one of the closest to Mawlana Mawdudi, he took part in elections of the Jammat-e-Islami but he was never interested in politics.
Islahi stayed in Jammat-e-Islami for 17 years. As he was one of the biggest Quran Intellucts, he remained an important element in the Pakistani Islamic Commission. In 1958, many policy issues rose between Islahi and Mawlana Mawdudi. He wasn’t satisfied with the Political party of Ulema because he used to think that using the name of Islam, they are only completing their aims. Ulema shouldn’t involve in politics, their work is to spread God’s message.
In his view, Gaining votes with the name of Allah and Islam just for power is pure hypocrisy.
Completion of Tadabur-i-Quran and teachings:
After he left the Jammat-e-Islami, his only aim was to spread the message of God and educating people, and giving them Islamic education. He started writing Tadabur-i-Quran, a complete exegesis of the Quran.
He used to publish parts of Tadabut-i-Quran in journals in the early 1960s. As Islahi was also a teacher. He gathered some of his college students who he taught Arabic and literature and began to teach them the interpretation of the Quran. His work decelerated because his son died in a plane crash in 1965.
Although, he continued work on Tadabur-i-Quran. He went to a village in Sheikhupura and continued his work on the commentary and exegesis of the Quran. In 1980, finally, he completed his book “Tadabur-i-Quran” after a continuous work of 22 years.
Islahi founded an institution named “Idar-e-Tadabur-i-Quran-Hadith” and started his intellectual activities there and almost until his death, it was his center of work on Islam.
He started work on Hadith and began to teach Al-Muwatta and Sahih Bukhari to his students. Khalid Masud, a student of Amin Ahmad Islahi, helped his message to spread to a wide range.

Death and Legacy:
At the age of 93 15 December 1997, Amin Ahmad Islahi died in Lahore. Although he wasn’t able to accelerate his work and to work on a big scale, some of his students continued his work. Khalid Masud was one of his great students, he continued the teachings of Amin Ahmad Islahi. Javed Ahmad Ghamidi, founder of Al-Mawrid was also a student of him. Ghamidi’s Al-Mawrid considers Amin Ahmad Islahi as their teacher. Now, Al-Mawrid has influenced many people, so we can say that Islahi’s teachings are alive and will be.
